Kanna's research focuses on globalization, urbanism, and cultural identity. His early work analyzed neoliberal urbanism in the Arab/Persian Gulf, particularly Dubai's transformation into a corporate city. Current projects explore militarized urbanism in the Global South and the cultural impacts of militarization in American society, including activist resistance movements.
He has published extensively in journals such as City, Cultural Anthropology, and Journal of Urban Affairs. His notable works include books like Dubai, The City as Corporation and The Superlative City, which critique how neoliberal economies prioritize spectacle-driven urban development over inclusive histories.
As a Professor, Kanna integrates critical pedagogy into his teaching, challenging students to question power structures in international relations and urban studies. His work remains influential in debates about globalization, spatial justice, and cultural resistance.
