Dr. Ahmed A. Alshareef is an Assistant Professor in the Biomedical Engineering Department at the University of South Carolina's Molinaroli College of Engineering and Computing. His research focuses on injury biomechanics, computational modeling, and medical imaging techniques such as MRI. He holds a B.S. from Duke University (2014) and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia (2019), both in Biomedical Engineering.
Dr. Alshareef's work emphasizes experimental and computational methods to study brain deformation, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and tissue mechanics. His lab develops subject-specific models using advanced imaging and data-driven approaches to improve injury prevention and clinical decision-making. Key interests include biomechanical 'digital twins,' multi-physics simulations, and statistical filtering to enhance model accuracy.
Recent publications highlight studies on brain deformation under rotational loading, MRI-based strain estimation, and the biomechanical effects of head shape and atrophy. His 2025 articles focus on tagged MRI analysis and computational validation of brain mechanics. Awards include the 2018 Virginia Engineering Fellowship and 2017 Anthony Marmarou Award.
His research also addresses clinical applications, such as chronic subdural hematoma management and drug-coated balloon therapies. Collaborative projects integrate human and animal data to refine TBI tolerance models, with a focus on translational research.
