Aharon Ben-Tal serves as Professor of Operations Research at the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, where he holds the Dresner Chair and previously led the MINERVA Optimization Center. His distinguished career includes two deanships (1989-1992, 2011-2014) and visiting professorships at MIT, Columbia University, and NYU.
His research spans Continuous Optimization with groundbreaking contributions to robust optimization under uncertainty, nonsmooth analysis, and conic programming. Recent work focuses on engineering applications where MINERVA Center algorithms are deployed in Medical Imaging and Aerospace industries. As of 2017, his scholarly impact exceeds 19,500 Google Scholar citations.
Major accolades include:
- EURO Gold Medal (2007) – Europe's highest OR distinction
- INFORMS Khachiyan Prize (2016) for lifetime optimization achievements
- ORSIS Lifetime Achievement Prize (2017)
- Fellowships from SIAM (2015) and INFORMS (2009)
He co-authored three foundational texts including Robust Optimization (Princeton, 2009) and published 130+ journal papers. His editorial leadership includes Area Editor roles for Mathematics of Operations Research (1993-1999) and Operations Research (2012-2014), with current service as Associate Editor for SIAM Journal on Optimization.
Professor Ben-Tal directs the MINERVA Optimization Center whose industry-adapted computational schemes solve critical engineering challenges. His ongoing research continues to shape optimization theory and practice through active editorial engagement and keynote lectures worldwide.
