Afshan Jafar serves as the May Buckley Sadowski '19 Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Sociology Department at Connecticut College, where she has been a faculty member since 2008.
Her educational credentials include a B.A. from Ohio Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Professor Jafar's research explores critical intersections of gender, embodiment, media, and globalization, with specialized focus on transnational women's movements, Muslim diaspora communities, nationalist/fundamentalist movements, and U.S. Muslim immigrant experiences. Her scholarship critically examines how global forces shape bodily practices and identities across cultural contexts.
Her distinguished contributions have earned recognition through:
- Helen B. Regan Faculty Leadership Award (2021) for exemplifying shared governance and campus community development
- Feminist Activism Award from Sociologists for Women in Society (2015)
- Helen Mulvey Faculty Award (2014) for exceptional teaching excellence
