Aeriel Leonard is a Distinguished Assistant Professor of Engineering Inclusive Excellence at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The Ohio State University. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from the University of Alabama (2012) and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan (2013-2017). Her postdoctoral work at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (Washington DC) focused on additive manufactured materials.
- Advanced Characterization Techniques
- In-situ Experiments
- Microstructural Evolution
- Additive Manufacturing
- Magnesium Alloys
- Lightweight Materials
Her research combines synchrotron/electron microscopy with mechanical behavior analysis in complex alloys and additive materials. She also contributes to outreach via the global light source network and Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS).
- Young Investigator Award (2021)
- Early Career Research Program Award (2022)
- NSF CAREER award (2024)
- Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award (2024)
Dr. Leonard runs the lifestyle blog AerielViews, targeting graduate and professional students, and has led initiatives like a leadership camp for female engineering students in Liberia.
