Adèle Mercier is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Queen's University, cross-appointed with the Linguistics Program. She holds degrees from the University of Ottawa (B.A., M.A.) and the University of California, Los Angeles (M.A., Ph.D. in Philosophy; M.A., C.Phil in Linguistics). She completed postdoctoral work at Stanford University’s Center for Study of Language and Information and Paris’s Institut Jean Nicod. She has served as a Visiting Professor at UCLA and the University of Barcelona, where she is affiliated with the LOGOS Research Group. She was elected President of the Canadian Philosophical Association in 2012.
Her research focuses on philosophy of language, logic, philosophy of cognition, natural language semantics, legal philosophy, and feminism. Notably, she authored a paper scrutinizing the use of masculine language as sex-neutral, which earned the American Philosophical Association’s Best Paper award. She has acted as an expert witness in legal cases involving semantics and gender/racial language, including Supreme Court of Canada proceedings on marriage equality. She advocates for women in philosophy and is developing a user-friendly logic textbook and a philosophical novel about her career at Queen’s University.
Her expertise spans interdisciplinary areas, including applied legal philosophy, feminist critiques of language, and foundational issues in linguistics. She remains active in academic leadership and public engagement, emphasizing clear communication of complex philosophical ideas.
