Dr. Adriano Sciacovelli is an Associate Professor in the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham and leads the MODES research group. He is a member of the Birmingham Centre for Energy Storage, focusing on energy process engineering, thermal energy storage, and process intensification. His research combines computational modelling with experimental heat transfer analysis to develop zero-carbon thermal energy solutions.
Education: PhD in Energy Engineering (Politecnico di Torino, 2010); MSc in Mechanical Engineering (Politecnico di Torino, 2006). He joined the University of Birmingham in 2017 after postdoctoral research.
Research interests include thermal energy systems, thermo-mechanical/chemical processes, waste heat recovery, and digital twin modelling for low-carbon energy processes. He has secured over 12 grants from EPSRC, EU, Royal Society, Innovate UK, and industry partners.
Awards: Edward F. Obert Award (ASME), Royal Society Award. He has published >100 peer-reviewed articles (h-index 24) and collaborates internationally with institutions in China, Italy, South Africa, and Australia.
Advising: Open to PhD students, particularly through international scholarships like Priestley (UK-Australia) or China Scholarship Council. Focus areas include energy storage, thermal systems, and modelling.
Labs/Teams: Leads the MODES group, specializing in energy storage and process innovation.
