Dr. Adrian Gradinar is a Lecturer in Smart Home Futures at Lancaster University's Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA), part of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He directs undergraduate program strategy and the LICA Festival. His research focuses on designing creative, technology-driven experiences to make academic knowledge accessible, exploring IoT, AR/VR, and smart home technologies. He has exhibited at major venues like The Tate Modern and V&A London.
Gradinar’s work emphasizes speculative and practice-based approaches, addressing how technology impacts daily life and societal interactions. His projects, often funded by EPSRC and AHRC, include initiatives on sustainable repair ecosystems, cybersecurity, and mixed-reality cultural engagement. He supervises 5 PhD students, guiding research in design innovation, ethical AI, and technology's societal role.
Notable collaborations include projects with BBC R&D, English Heritage, and community partners like The Making Rooms Blackburn. His grants span £7k to £70k+ from UK research councils, focusing on IoT sustainability, data ethics, and public engagement.
