Adrian Friday is Professor of Computing and Sustainability at Lancaster University's School of Computing and Communications. With over 25 years of experience as a Ubicomp pioneer, he develops and studies digital infrastructures embedded in everyday environments, focusing on their impact on energy consumption and carbon footprint. His interdisciplinary work spans sustainable food systems, transportation infrastructure, last-mile logistics, and industrial energy data analysis.
His educational background includes a Doctor of Philosophy (1996) and a 1st Class B.SC. Hons in Computer Science from the University of London (1991).
Professor Friday's research interests center on ubiquitous computing applications for sustainability, with particular focus on understanding how everyday digital systems impact energy demand and carbon emissions. His work combines technical innovation with human factors analysis to develop interventions that promote sustainable behavior in home environments, transportation systems, and food supply chains. He applies time-series statistical and machine learning techniques to analyze fine-grained energy data and inform sustainable system design.
His publication portfolio shows a clear trajectory toward increasingly integrated sustainability research, with recent work focusing on digitalization's environmental impact, sustainable infrastructure transformation, and ethical considerations in the gig economy. Professor Friday actively supervises PhD students across various sustainability-focused projects and has served on numerous conference program committees. He currently serves as Part 2 Tutor for Computer Science and Communications undergraduate programs at Lancaster University.
His research group works on multiple funded projects including 'Reimagining digital research infrastructure in environmental science for a sustainable future' (2025-2027), 'Reducing the Global ICT Footprint via Self-adaptive Large-scale' (2022-2023), and 'Future Places: A Digital Economy Centre on Understanding Place Through Pervasive Computing' (2020-2026).
