Adrian Bejan is the J.A. Jones Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Duke University since 1989, with prior tenured roles at Duke (1984-1989) and the University of Colorado (1978-1984). His work bridges thermodynamics, heat transfer, and the Constructal Law, which he pioneered to explain natural design evolution. He holds 18 honorary doctorates globally and ranks among the top 100 most cited engineering authors (ISI, 2001).
- Education: B.S., M.S., Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT (1971-1975).
Research spans thermodynamics, natural convection, heat and mass transfer, and Constructal Law—a theory positing that natural and engineered systems evolve to maximize flow access. His work has been recognized with prestigious awards like the Benjamin Franklin Medal and Max Jakob Memorial Award.
Recent publications focus on evolutionary design in heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and societal systems, emphasizing constructal principles across scales—from microchannel optimization to global energy networks. Articles highlight applications in thermal management, aeroelastic design, and biological locomotion.
