Dr. Adelheid Müller is a Researcher at the Institute of Classical Archaeology within the Department of Historical and Cultural Sciences at Freie Universität Berlin. She has been actively involved in significant academic projects, most notably the historical-critical and annotated edition of J.J. Winckelmann's works at the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature.
Her research focuses on the history of archaeology from the 18th to 20th centuries, the reception of Greek and Roman antiquity, and the work and reception of Johann Joachim Winckelmann. She has particular expertise in aesthetic theory from the 18th-20th centuries and gender history, with special attention to figures like Elisa von der Recke and Friederike Brun. Müller's scholarly approach integrates science history, scholarly networks, and collection history to understand how knowledge about antiquity was formed and transmitted.
Müller's extensive publication record reveals a consistent interest in how women scholars engaged with classical antiquity during the Enlightenment and Romantic periods. Her work demonstrates how figures like Elisa von der Recke and Friederike Brun participated in the 'Universitas of Rome' and contributed to the scholarly discourse despite gender barriers. She examines the intersection of gender, scholarly networks, and the reception of antiquity with particular attention to how women navigated intellectual spaces.
