Adam Wood is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Wheaton College specializing in medieval philosophy, particularly the works of Thomas Aquinas. His academic journey includes a B.A. in Philosophy and Ancient Languages from Wheaton College (2004), an M.A. in Philosophy from Fordham University (2007), and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Fordham University (2012).
Dr. Wood's research focuses on the immateriality of the human intellect, resurrection theories, souls and their powers, theories of cognition, and the problem of hell. He has published extensively in these areas, with recent articles appearing in journals such as the European Journal for Philosophy of Religion, Christian Scholars Review, and the Heythrop Journal. His most significant work is the book 'Thomas Aquinas on the Immateriality of the Human Intellect' (2019), which provides the first book-length examination of Aquinas's claim about the immateriality of the human intellect.
His research interests span Medieval Philosophy, Philosophy of Mind, Metaphysics, Aristotle, Philosophy of Religion, Environmental Ethics, and Islamic Philosophy. Dr. Wood teaches courses including Aquinas, History of Philosophy (Ancient and Medieval), Souls and Brains, The Good Life, Faith Reason and Politics in Islam, and Introduction to Philosophy.
Dr. Wood has presented his research at numerous international conferences, including the University of Navarre, St. Louis University, and Cornell University. His publications from 2011-2020 demonstrate consistent scholarly output in his specialized fields.
Outside his academic work, Dr. Wood has co-authored several historical guidebooks about London with Richard Jones and served as Executive Editor of Ripperologist magazine and Editor of the Journal of the Police History Society (2017-2020), reflecting his interest in Victorian history and crime.
Dr. Wood is married to Caris, an Occupational Therapist, and they have four children: Gus, Cate, Abe and Sophie. The family are members of All Souls Anglican Church and reside in West Chicago. When not working, Dr. Wood enjoys outdoor activities including gardening, running, biking, hiking, and fly fishing.
