Adam Sobel is a Professor of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics, and of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University. He directs the Initiative on Extreme Weather and Climate, focusing on meteorology, atmospheric dynamics, tropical meteorology, and extreme weather phenomena. Sobel earned his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1998. His research has been recognized with the 2014 American Geophysical Union Atmospheric Science Section Ascent Award. He co-edited the book The Global Circulation of the Atmosphere (2007) and authored Storm Surge: Hurricane Sandy, Our Changing Climate, and Extreme Weather of the Past and Future (2014). His work has been widely cited (≈5,000 citations) with an h-index of 38 as of 2015.
- Education: Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, MIT, 1998.
Research Interests: Sobel’s work explores the dynamics of the Earth’s atmosphere, climate systems, and extreme weather events such as hurricanes. His studies bridge theoretical meteorology with applied climate science, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to understand and predict weather-related hazards.
- Awards: American Geophysical Union Atmospheric Science Section Ascent Award (2014).
Initiatives: Leads Columbia’s Initiative on Extreme Weather and Climate, advancing research and public understanding of climate-driven extreme weather events.
