Adam Robinson is a Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Edinburgh's School of Engineering. He holds a PhD from Nottingham (2010) on gas turbine bearing chambers and an MEng from UWE Bristol (2006). A Chartered Mechanical Engineer and IMechE member, his industry background includes Rolls-Royce turbine design and aerospace systems engineering.
Research centers on ultra-high temperature energy storage (>1800K), thermal insulation systems, and renewable energy integration. Current projects include liquid metal solar receivers, evacuated honeycomb insulation structures, and thermal storage for grid-scale applications. Secondary interests involve experimental fluid dynamics for marine energy testing facilities.
Recent publications focus on heat transfer optimization at extreme temperatures, computational modeling of liquid metal systems, and thermo-mechanical analysis of advanced materials. Research consistently addresses energy density challenges and conversion efficiency in next-generation storage systems.
He leads projects including 'CharMPol: Characterization and Modeling of high-performance polymers' and 'Exergy3: Ultrahigh temperature thermal storage conversion for zero-carbon systems'. Manages research associates and PhD candidates investigating materials, heat exchangers, and grid integration for thermal storage.
