Adam Reitzel is a Professor of Biological Sciences and Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Education at the Klein College of Science (KCOS), University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He holds a PhD in Biology from Boston University (2008). His research focuses on the evolution and ecology of coastal invertebrates, leveraging comparative genomics, molecular biology, and field studies, with a primary model organism, the starlet sea anemone (Nematostella vectensis). He co-directs the CIPHER Center, an interdisciplinary initiative addressing human health and environmental risks through computational intelligence.
Education:
- PhD, Biology, Boston University, 2008
- MS, Zoology, University of Florida
- BS, Biology, Illinois Wesleyan University
His research integrates genomic tools and ecological fieldwork to study adaptation in marine species. He has secured over $7.17M in grants from NSF, NIH, and other agencies. Recent work includes collaborations on pandemic prevention and community science initiatives.
Awards:
- First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal (2024)
- Harshini V. de Silva Graduate Mentor Award (2024)
- Faculty Fellow of Grant Writing (2024)
Mentoring & Grants: Reitzel advises undergraduate and graduate students, such as Rachel Showers (Derrick Griffith Servant Leader Award recipient). He emphasizes interdisciplinary mentorship and grant writing support through his faculty fellowship.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Reitzel Lab and co-directs CIPHER, fostering collaboration across 20+ disciplines to address global health and environmental challenges.
