Adam R. Heinrich

Adam R. Heinrich is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and Anthropology at Monmouth University, specializing in historical and prehistoric archaeology with a particular focus on zooarchaeology. With a Ph.D. from Rutgers University, Dr. Heinrich brings cross-disciplinary methods and perspectives to his research and teaching, examining historical adaptations to new environments and developing market systems.

Dr. Heinrich's research interests span historical and prehistoric zooarchaeology, cultural and environmental variation in husbandry and meat consumption, taphonomy, African and European diaspora studies, 17th-19th century commemoration practices, osteology/forensics, archaeobotany, experimental archaeology, development of mercantile systems, consumerism in archaeology, and material culture and social processes. His work demonstrates a strong commitment to methodological rigor, particularly in applying taphonomic research to historical faunal analyses.

His publication record shows a consistent output of scholarly work from 2011-2024, with recent articles focusing on enslaved and free Black diets in Delaware, Jewish settlement patterns in New Jersey, Woodland Period shelters, and Lenape horticultural practices. His research demonstrates a strong regional focus on New Jersey and the Delaware River Valley, while also incorporating international perspectives through his work on the Dutch East India Company's settlement at the Cape of Good Hope.
