Dr Adam Hurlstone is a Reader at the University of Manchester in the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, within the Division of Immunology, Immunity to Infection and Respiratory Medicine. He obtained his PhD from the University of Glasgow (1998) and a BA in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge (1994). His research focuses on harnessing T cells to combat cancer, particularly investigating adaptive resistance to immune checkpoint inhibitors and engineering T cells to target tumors. He leads projects on melanoma oncogenes, immunotherapy resistance, and zebrafish models for growth and metabolic studies. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and innovation.
Research interests include T cell dysfunction in cancer therapy, engineered T cell therapies, and tumor microenvironment interactions. Key contributions include studies on PARP14 inhibition, LSD1 targeting, and DGAT1 oncogenes. He has supervised 21 students and led multiple grants, including projects on melanoma and immunotherapy resistance.
His lab utilizes zebrafish models to study growth and metabolism, linking developmental biology to clinical applications. Notable publications address T cell quiescence, macrophage polarization, and breast cancer invasion mechanisms. Collaborations span global institutions, with a focus on translational oncology and immunotherapy advancements.
