Adam Gaiser is a Professor of Religion at Florida State University, affiliated with the Department of Religion within the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in the history of religions from the University of Virginia (2005). His research focuses on early Islamic sectarianism, particularly the Kharijites and Ibadiyya, and medieval Muslim sectarianism. He teaches courses on Islamic studies, including Shi‘ism, Islamic Law, and the Prophet Muhammad. Currently, he is working on a book titled An Introduction to Ibadi Islam (Cambridge University Press), exploring the history and identity of the Ibadiyya. Professor Gaiser is accepting graduate students for M.A. and Ph.D. research in Islamic studies. His office is located in 313 Dodd Hall, and he holds office hours by appointment.
Research Interests: Early Islamic history, sectarian historiography, and the doctrinal development of marginal Islamic groups.
