Adam Fish is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Arts and Media at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). As a Scientia Fellow (Level D), he works across multiple disciplines including cultural anthropology, digital media studies, environmental science, and visual arts. His academic journey began with a PhD in Cultural Anthropology from UCLA in 2013, followed by positions at Lancaster University before joining UNSW in 2019.
Dr. Fish's research interests span a wide range of interdisciplinary topics focused on the social, political, and ecological impacts of new technologies. His work particularly examines:
- The intersection of drone technology with environmental conservation and Indigenous rights
- Digital media and internet governance from grassroots perspectives
- Renewable energy development on Indigenous lands
- Decolonial approaches to technology and media studies
- The cultural implications of emerging technologies in diverse global contexts
His recent publications reveal a clear trajectory toward examining the relationship between technology, Indigenous sovereignty, and environmental justice. A significant portion of his recent work focuses on drone technology applications in conservation, energy development, and Indigenous land management. His research increasingly emphasizes decolonial approaches to technology, challenging Western-centric perspectives in media and environmental studies. The geographical scope of his work spans Indigenous communities in Australia, North America, Indonesia, and beyond, highlighting the global nature of technological impacts on local communities.
Among his notable achievements is the Pilkington Teaching Award received at Lancaster University in 2016, recognizing his innovative teaching approaches. His research has been supported by multiple grants including Leverhulme Research Fellowship, European Cooperation in Science and Technology funding, and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council grants.
Dr. Fish maintains active collaborations with Indigenous communities, particularly focusing on how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples engage with renewable energy industries. His current projects involve examining drone technology applications in marine conservation and renewable energy development on Indigenous lands across multiple continents.
