Adam Derek Zientek is an Associate Professor in the History Department at UC Davis, specializing in modern European history with emphasis on France. His research examines the social history of warfare, including airpower development, military medicine/psychiatry, and the historical role of alcohol/drugs in combat contexts.
His award-winning book 'A Thirst for Wine and War' (2024) analyzes how French soldiers used state-provided alcohol to cope with psychological trauma during WWI trench warfare. He teaches courses on modern Western civilization, war experiences, French history, human rights, and revolutionary periods.
Honors include the Tomlinson Prize for best WWI history monograph (2024) and the Gargan Award for graduate research (2011).
