Adam Bush is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on developing novel MRI methods to study pathophysiological mechanisms in cardiovascular disease, anemic disorders, and cancer, emphasizing blood flow and oximetry. He leads the TCILab (website: https://sites.utexas.edu/tcilab/), combining engineering, physiology, and medicine to improve imaging safety and diagnostic accuracy in pediatric populations. His work addresses challenges in sickle cell disease, including cerebral oxygenation deficits and hemodynamic abnormalities.
Research areas include non-invasive imaging techniques (ultrasound, BOLD MRI, NIRS), cerebral metabolic rate quantification, and mechanobiology of blood clots. His lab's innovations aim to enhance understanding of disease mechanisms through advanced imaging and computational methods. Key contributions include calibration of T2 oximetry for sickle cell patients and development of motion-robust MRI trajectory protocols.
Publications emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to vascular and metabolic imaging in chronic diseases. Recent work highlights cerebral oxygen supply-demand mismatches in sickle cell disease and novel ultrasound systems for pediatric hemodynamic assessment. Current efforts focus on improving diagnostic tools for anemia-related complications and advancing quantitative MRI techniques.
