Adam Broinowski

Adam Broinowski is a Lecturer at the School of Culture, History and Language in the College of Asia and the Pacific at the Australian National University, with additional roles as an Honorary Researcher and member of interdisciplinary research groups including Extreme Events and Future Scenarios, Low Carbon and Resilient Cities, and Psychology, Communication and the Arts.

His research and teaching focus on the history of empire in Asia, modern and contemporary history of Japan and East Asia, performance and film studies, and critical international relations in the Asia-Pacific, particularly energy and nuclear politics. Scientific awards include the ARC DECRA Fellowship (DE 130100174) for nuclear disaster studies, the Monbukagakusho Fellowship at the University of Tokyo, and a Research Fellowship at the Alfred Deakin Research Institute.

He has contributed to academic and policy discourse through publications like his 2016 monograph Cultural Responses to Occupation in Japan (Bloomsbury Academic) and chapters in edited volumes. His scholarship integrates theatre and film-making expertise, emphasizing arts and media in sociopolitical narratives.
