Abhinav Bhushan is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), affiliated with the Armour College of Engineering and the Center for Sports Innovation. His research focuses on developing microfluidic organ-on-chip systems to study disease mechanisms, particularly metabolic and inflammatory disorders, and creating biosensors for biochemical measurements. He holds a B.S. (Honors) in Mechanical Engineering from Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (1998), M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Louisiana State University (2002, 2007), and a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School and the University of California, Davis.
His work spans organ-on-chip models (e.g., intestine, adipose, liver), bacterial-host interactions, and diagnostic sensors. Key achievements include NSF CAREER Award (2023) and Young Innovator Fellow recognition (2022). His recent publications address insulin resistance modeling, SARS-CoV-2 mechanisms, and engineered bacterial therapeutics. Bhushan collaborates on interdisciplinary projects, such as cancer-on-chip models and VOC profiling for noninfectious diseases.
Publications highlight advancements in microfluidic device design, including collagen-based membranes for intestinal models and real-time cholesterol assays. His lab explores applications in drug screening, personalized medicine, and environmental monitoring. Current projects include studying anoxic environments' impact on gut function and developing point-of-care devices for periodontitis.
