Dr. Abhijit Champanerkar is Professor of Mathematics at College of Staten Island and Doctoral Faculty in the Mathematics Program at The Graduate Center, both part of the City University of New York system. His academic appointments span both undergraduate and graduate education within the CUNY system.
Dr. Champanerkar's research focuses on hyperbolic 3-manifolds and knot theory. He investigates the deformations of hyperbolic structures on 3-manifolds, interactions between hyperbolic geometry with number theory, and seeks to relate geometric invariants like hyperbolic volume to diagrammatic invariants like the Jones polynomial. He also explores knots from the perspective of graph theory.
As a researcher, Dr. Champanerkar is a member of a Focused Research Group that received an NSF-FRG grant for collaborative research in geometric topology. With this funding, he has co-organized two major international conferences focused on the Volume Conjecture. He is also a co-organizer of the CUNY Geometry and Topology Seminar held at the Graduate Center.
- Ph.D. from Columbia University (2003)
- Postdoctoral Fellow at Barnard College, Columbia University
- Assistant Professor at University of South Alabama (4 years)
Dr. Champanerkar teaches undergraduate courses at CSI including Calculus III, Introduction to Mathematical Proof, Linear Algebra, and Topology. At the Graduate Center, he teaches advanced courses such as Knots and 3-manifolds, Geometry and Topology of 3-manifolds, and Hyperbolic 3-manifolds. His teaching philosophy emphasizes conceptual understanding alongside computational proficiency, with particular attention to developing proof-writing skills in advanced courses.
