Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee is an economist and Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He co-founded the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) with Esther Duflo and Sendhil Mullainathan, which conducts rigorous impact evaluations to address global poverty. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University in 1988 under Eric Maskin. Previously, he held Associate Professor roles at Princeton University (1988–1992) and Harvard University (1992–1993). His work on randomized controlled trials in development economics earned him the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, shared with Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer.
