Abhay Shukla is a Professor of exceptional class at the Institute of Mineralogy, Materials Physics and Cosmochemistry (IMPMC) within the Faculty of Physics at Sorbonne University. His career spans over two decades with progressive academic appointments since joining UPMC (now part of Sorbonne University) in 2002, reaching the highest professorial rank in 2013. He has held significant leadership positions including Director of the Doctoral School of Physics and Chemistry of Materials (2009-2013) and membership on the UPMC board and foundation board.
Professor Shukla's research focuses on three interconnected domains: (1) Electronic properties and vibrational states of 2D materials and devices, particularly exploring electronic phase transitions, superconductivity in few-layer materials, and optoelectronic applications; (2) Electronic and structural properties of materials using advanced X-ray synchrotron spectroscopy techniques developed at facilities like ESRF and SOLEIL; and (3) Instrumentation innovations including patented methods for anodic bonding of 2D semiconductors and space charge doping of thin films. His work bridges fundamental physics with practical applications in nanotechnology.
His publication record includes over 100 papers spanning two decades, with recent focus on 2D materials like graphene, MoS2, and InSe. Analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on electronic structure characterization, novel doping techniques, and the development of hybrid 2D material systems for next-generation electronic and optoelectronic devices. His research demonstrates consistent integration of theoretical understanding with experimental innovation.

Professor Shukla has advised numerous doctoral students through his role as Director of the Doctoral School of Physics and Chemistry of Materials (ED397). His laboratory work combines low temperature magnetotransport measurements, Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and advanced X-ray techniques including inelastic scattering under high pressure conditions.
