Abba Gumel holds the Michael and Eugenia Brin Endowed Chair in Mathematics at the University of Maryland, specializing in mathematical epidemiology and disease dynamics. His research develops models for infectious disease transmission under climate change, zoonotic spillover, and intervention scenarios. Gumel's COVID-19 research informed mask policies and vaccination strategies globally.
- PhD in Engineering Systems Design, University of New Hampshire
- JSPS Fellowship, University of Ueda
Research integrates One Health approaches across human-animal-environment interfaces. Current projects:
- Climate impacts on vector-borne disease distribution
- Malaria transmission in insecticide-resistant mosquitoes
- MERS-CoV dynamics in camel populations
- Vaccine-derived herd immunity thresholds
Publications demonstrate expertise in pandemic forecasting, intervention modeling, and climate-disease interactions. Recent studies address Omicron variant dynamics, aerosol filtration efficiency, and long-term immunity.
- TWAS Fellow (2024)
- AAAS Fellow (2022)
- Bellman Prize (2021)
Gumel leads multiple NSF and ERC grants on regulatory trust and disease dynamics. His Einstein Public Lecture addressed mathematics' role in pandemic response. Collaborations span public health agencies globally.
