Aaron Koller is Professor of Near Eastern studies at Yeshiva University, where he serves as chair of the Beren Department of Jewish Studies. He has held visiting professorships at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and research fellowships at the Albright Institute for Archaeological Research and the Hartman Institute.
Dr. Koller's research focuses on Near Eastern studies with specialization in Jewish thought, Semitic philology, and biblical interpretation. His scholarly approach examines ancient Jewish texts through historical, linguistic, and archaeological lenses, particularly investigating how Jewish thought evolved through different historical periods and how biblical narratives were interpreted throughout Jewish history. He bridges academic scholarship with traditional Jewish interpretation, providing nuanced understandings of biblical and post-biblical Jewish literature through philological precision and historical awareness.
Dr. Koller's publications reveal research trends spanning biblical linguistics, comparative religious studies, and ancient Near Eastern contexts. His work consistently explores the intersection of textual analysis, historical context, and ongoing interpretive traditions, particularly regarding Esther, the Akedah narrative, and ancient Hebrew script development.
Dr. Koller has authored significant scholarly works including Esther in Ancient Jewish Thought (Cambridge University Press) and Unbinding Isaac: The Akedah in Jewish Thought (forthcoming from JPS/University of Nebraska Press in 2020), along with Iran, Israel, and the Jews: Symbiosis and Conflict from the Achaemenids to the Islamic Republic.
Dr. Koller resides in Queens, NY with his wife, Shira Hecht-Koller, and their children, maintaining active engagement in both academic and Jewish communal life.
