A.S. Fokas is a distinguished Professor of Nonlinear Mathematical Science at the University of Cambridge's Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. He holds positions as Professorial Fellow of Clare Hall and has served as Chair of Mathematics at Clarkson University and Imperial College London. His academic journey includes a BSc from Imperial College (1975), a PhD from Caltech (1979), and an MD from the University of Miami (1986).
His research focuses on integrable systems, boundary value problems, medical imaging, and protein folding. Notable contributions include the unified transform method for PDEs and advancements in neuroimaging through the d-Bar method. Fokas has been honored with the Naylor Prize (2000), Aristeion Prize (2004), and Bodossaki Foundation Excellence Prize (2006), among others. He is a Full Member of the Academy of Athens and has authored/co-authored over 300 papers and several influential textbooks.
He has delivered plenary addresses at major conferences, including the International Congress of Mathematicians and the Isaac Newton Institute. His work bridges pure mathematics with applications in biology, medicine, and engineering. Fokas has also contributed to public science through lectures at Harvard and public talks in Greece on topics like research ethics and the diachronic value of libraries.
