A.D. Nelson is a Professor in Food Security at the Department of Natural Resources (ITC-NRS) within the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation at the University of Twente, Netherlands. His career spans roles at CIAT (Colombia), the World Bank (Washington DC), JRC (Italy), and IRRI (Philippines).
- Coordinates GEM, a long-running Erasmus+ MSc program on Earth Observation (EO) and GIS.
- Co-founded Geoversity, a lifelong learning platform partnered with NASA SERVIR and NSO.
- Contributed to flagship policy reports for the World Bank and FAO.
Research Focus: Enhancing food security through EO and geospatial methods, including global accessibility maps, PRiSM (Philippines rice monitoring), and DOPA (European Commission's protected area monitoring). His work spans four domains:
- Community Development: Capacity-building projects funded by EC, Nuffic, BMGF, and FAO.
- Social/Economic Impact: Operational systems for typhoon impact warnings and seasonal rice data.
- Policy Advocacy: Influencing global frameworks for crop health and food transport resilience.
- Innovative Methods: Mentoring 20 PhD candidates, advancing RS-based tools for food systems and environment.
