A-Xing Zhu is a Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He specializes in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and applications in environmental modeling. His research focuses on soft knowledge-based techniques for spatial variation mapping, watershed system science, and intelligent geocomputing. He holds the Manasse Chair Professorship and has been recognized with awards such as the CPGIS Education Excellence Award and the Vilas Associate Award.
His research interests include GIS/remote sensing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and fuzzy logic applied to natural resource management. Notable projects involve soil mapping, habitat suitability analysis, and scenario-based watershed modeling. He leads the SoLIM (Spatial Optimization and Landscape Informatics Modeling) group and has contributed to over 150 peer-reviewed publications. His work emphasizes integrating technical expertise with environmental disciplines to address complex spatial challenges.
Zhu has received grants and fellowships, including the Hamel Faculty Fellow Award and the World Bank Scholarship. His contributions span academic service, including roles in CPGIS and UCGIS committees. The SoLIM lab develops innovative tools like the CyberSoLIM platform for digital soil mapping and geospatial analysis.
