Lukasz Stanek is Professor of Architecture at A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA, with a secondary appointment at the Department of History. His scholarly work bridges architectural history, urban studies, and global political economy, focusing on connections between Eastern Europe, West Africa, and the Middle East during the Cold War period.
Stanek's educational background includes a Master of Architecture from Kraków University of Technology, a Master of Philosophy from Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland, and a Ph.D. from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Prior to his position at Michigan, he taught at ETH Zurich and the University of Manchester, and held guest professorships at Harvard University and the University of Ghana.
His research centers on architectural exchanges during the Cold War, with particular focus on socialist worldmaking and architectural gift-giving. Stanek's work challenges traditional geographical dichotomies between 'Global North' and 'Global South,' revealing complex patterns of architectural mobility and knowledge transfer that operated outside colonial-capitalist frameworks. His recent projects examine how architectural gifts function as political and social instruments, shaping urban landscapes and international relations.
Stanek's publications reveal a consistent focus on transnational architectural exchanges, particularly how socialist countries engaged in architectural collaborations with newly independent nations in Africa and the Middle East. His work demonstrates how these exchanges created conceptual innovations relevant to contemporary urban challenges, particularly regarding decolonization and sustainable urban development.

His curatorial practice extends his scholarly work into public engagement through exhibitions such as 'The Gift: Stories of Generosity and Violence in Architecture' (Munich, 2024) and 'Accra Futurism' (Accra, 2019), which have been presented at major international venues including the Venice and Rotterdam Biennales of Architecture.
Stanek's work operates at the intersection of architectural history, anthropology, and political economy, creating a distinctive approach to understanding how architecture functions within global power structures and exchange systems.
