Prof. Önder Metin is a distinguished faculty member in the Chemistry Department at Koç University, Istanbul, Turkey, with over 160 publications spanning nanomaterials, catalysis, and sustainable energy applications. His research has established him as a leading scientist in 2D materials and their applications in energy conversion and environmental remediation.
His academic journey includes:
- PhD in Chemistry from Middle East Technical University (2010)
- Master's in Chemistry from Middle East Technical University (2006)
- B.Sc. in Chemistry from Çukurova University (2002)
- Post-Doctoral Research at Brown University (2012-2013)
Prof. Metin's research focuses on 2D materials, particularly black phosphorus and its heterostructures, with applications in nanocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis. His work bridges fundamental materials science with practical applications in hydrogen production, sustainable organic synthesis, and environmental remediation. He has pioneered novel catalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions, transfer hydrogenation processes, and C-H functionalization chemistry, with significant contributions to metal-free photocatalysis using graphitic carbon nitride-based materials.
His recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate a strong emphasis on heterostructure engineering, particularly black phosphorus composites with transition metal dichalcogenides and carbon-based materials. These advanced materials show remarkable performance in applications ranging from wearable biosensors for glucose monitoring to light-activated antibacterial agents and efficient catalysts for hydrogen production. The research reveals a clear trend toward multifunctional nanomaterials that combine several properties (electronic, optical, catalytic) in single systems.
His scientific achievements have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards:
- TÜBİTAK Research Encouragement Award (2017)
- Science Academy Young Scientists Award (BAGEP) (2017)
- Koç University Outstanding Faculty Award (2020)
- Associate Member of Turkish Academy of Sciences (TUBA) (2018)
- Special Nejat Veziroğlu Award (2025)
Prof. Metin has successfully mentored numerous graduate students who have become co-authors on high-impact publications. His research group operates with substantial funding from national and international sources, supporting cutting-edge work in nanomaterials synthesis and characterization. He maintains active collaborations with research groups worldwide, enhancing the global impact of his work through joint publications and international conference presentations.
His laboratory at Koç University comprises a multidisciplinary team of researchers working on various aspects of nanomaterials science, including synthesis of 2D materials, development of novel catalysts, and creation of functional nanocomposites for energy applications. The lab is equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation for materials characterization and catalytic testing, enabling comprehensive investigation of structure-property relationships in advanced materials.
