About
Åsa Emmer is a Professor in the Division of Applied Physical Chemistry at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health. She holds a doctoral degree in Analytical Chemistry from KTH and has advanced through the academic ranks, contributing significantly to research and education in analytical sciences.
Her research focuses on sample preparation, separation science, mass spectrometry, and miniaturization, with applications in biosamples, biomolecules, and bioactive substances. She develops methods for analyzing complex systems such as amyloid β-peptides in Alzheimer’s research, glycoproteins like osteopontin, and plant-derived semiochemicals for mosquito control. Her work integrates capillary electrophoresis, microfluidics, MALDI-MS, and novel sample enrichment techniques to enhance sensitivity and selectivity, especially with small and complex samples.
Recent publications highlight trends in biopharmaceutical process monitoring, green analytical chemistry, environmental analysis, and point-of-care diagnostics. Her research spans from fundamental instrumentation development—such as MS calibration and ion trap behavior—to applied projects like the EU-funded IMI iConsensus program and a VR project on malaria mosquito attractants in Kenya.
Åsa Emmer is actively involved in teaching and academic leadership. She is course responsible for several master’s and doctoral courses in analytical chemistry and serves as program director for the doctoral program in Chemical Science and Engineering. She has supervised over 70 master’s and 30 bachelor’s theses, including international ERASMUS projects.
Her scientific contributions are supported by collaborations across disciplines and institutions, including the former School of Technology and Health at KTH and the International Center of Insect Physiology and Ecology in Kenya.
