Álvaro A. Ayo

Álvaro A. Ayo is a Professor of Spanish Peninsular Literature at the University of Tennessee. He specializes in 18th- and 19th-century Spanish literature and culture, with recent focus on imperialism, humanitarianism, and global citizenship in Spanish letters (1874–1914). He holds a PhD from the University of Arizona.

His research includes a 2022 monograph Conquistando la leyenda negra: imperio, fraternidad universal y el individuo moderno en Pardo Bazán y Blasco Ibáñez, and articles on authors like Ramón Pérez de Ayala, Benito Pérez Galdós, and Miguel de Unamuno. His current project, Global Imaginings: Visualizing the World and Humanity in Spanish Letters (1874–1914), explores themes through works by Juan Valera, Francisco Giner de los Ríos, and others.
