Associate Professor
James van Dyke is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Missouri's School of Visual Studies, focusing on modern German art's intersection with politics, social history, and institutional critique. His teaching spans from pre-French Revolution painting to contemporary visual culture. Education: PhD (Northwestern, 1996), MA (Northwestern, 1990), BA (College of Wooster, 1988) Dr. van Dyke's research examines how catastrophic historical events and ideological conflicts shape art and institutions. His seminal work on Otto Dix explores precarity in Weimar culture, while his upcoming book analyzes Royal Dutch Shell's corporate imagery across fascist and revolutionary regimes. His publications bridge German art history from Imperial to Nazi periods. His scholarly impact includes fellowships from DAAD, Gerda-Henkel-Stiftung, and CASVA. He has taught at Reed College and Oberlin College before joining Mizzou in 2010. His courses include museum studies, war photography, and advanced topics in contemporary art.
