Associate Professor
Cristiano Loss is an Associate Professor of Timber Engineering in the Department of Wood Science , Faculty of Forestry , University of British Columbia . He concurrently serves as Associate Chair in Wood Building Design and Construction , leads the UBC Timber Engineering and Applied Mechanics (TEAM) group, and directs the Sustainable Engineered Structural Solutions Laboratory . Research Interests: Timber and engineered wood structural design Hybrid steel-timber building systems Seismic performance of mass-timber structures Vibration serviceability of timber floors Cross-laminated timber (CLT) assemblies Prefabricated and industrialized timber systems Over the past decade, Professor Loss has published extensively on advanced analytical and experimental techniques for evaluating the structural, dynamic, and seismic behavior of timber-based systems. His recent work leverages high-fidelity finite-element modelling, genetic algorithm optimization, and machine learning to predict and enhance the performance of connectors, shear walls, and floor diaphragms in mid- to high-rise timber buildings. Scientific Awards & Recognition: While the provided text does not enumerate specific awards, Professor Loss’s prolific publication record and leadership roles at UBC indicate substantial peer recognition in the field of timber engineering.
