Professor
Christian Huber is a Professor of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at Brown University. His research focuses on multiphase processes in Earth and planetary systems, including volcanology, geodynamics, and porous media flows. He holds degrees from the University of Geneva (B.Sc., M.Sc. in Earth Sciences; B.Sc. in Physics) and a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley (2009). Before joining Brown in 2016, he was on the tenure-track faculty at Georgia Tech. Huber’s work spans theoretical, numerical, and experimental approaches, addressing topics like magma dynamics, planetary crustal structures, and subglacial volcanism. Education : B.Sc. Recent studies include volcanic eruptions triggered by ice melt in Antarctica, magma supply dynamics in Japan, and Mercury’s carbon-rich mantle structure. His work integrates computational models with field data to advance understanding of crustal and planetary evolution. Publications & Awards : With over 97 publications, his work appears in Nature Geoscience , Journal of Geophysical Research , and others. Key awards include the NSF CAREER Award (2015) and the Paul Niggli Medal (2010). His research has been highlighted in Eos for insights into seafloor spreading and Antarctic volcanic hazards. Teaching & Mentoring : Huber teaches courses on computational modeling, physical volcanology, and continuum physics. He mentors PhD candidate Allie Coonin, whose work on subglacial eruptions is groundbreaking. Collaborations with Tsai Victor and Olivier Bachmann drive interdisciplinary projects in magma chamber dynamics and planetary geoscience.
