Associate Professor
Stephen Viller is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science at the University of Queensland, leading the Human-Centred Computing discipline. He holds roles as Theme Leader for Digital Worlds and Disruptive Technologies in the QUEX Institute and previously served as Director of Coursework Studies and Program Director for Multimedia Design and Interaction Design programs. His research focuses on human-centered design methods applied to social, domestic, and mobile computing technologies, emphasizing qualitative approaches like fieldwork, interviews, and designerly strategies such as cultural probes and prototyping. Education: BSc (Hons) in Computation (UMIST), MSc in Cognitive Science (Manchester), PhD in Computing (Lancaster). Research interests span HCI, CSCW, interaction design, and technology’s role in everyday life. Over 20+ years of experience bridges disciplines like computer science, cognitive science, and design. His work explores how observational and participatory methods inform technology design, particularly in contexts like healthcare, energy systems, and education. Publications span 7 book chapters, 22 journal articles, and 69 conference papers, addressing topics from AI-driven food systems to speculative design of personal data trails. He collaborates on projects like sustainable energy grids, VR tools for energy management, and pedagogical innovations in computer science education. Labs/Teams: Active in the QUEX Institute and the Research Centre in Creative Arts and Human Flourishing. His work intersects with interdisciplinary teams across design, engineering, and social sciences.
