Yafrainy Familia is a PhD Candidate and Researcher at the University of Virginia, affiliated with the Department of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. She holds a Solidarity Fellowship in the Diaspora Solidarities Lab and is an Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellow in Caribbean Literatures, Arts, and Cultures. Her research bridges visual, literary, and spatial analysis with community-engaged practices, focusing on Caribbean art, gender, and spatial politics. Her dissertation, "Sites of Freedom: Caribbean Art, Gender and the Politics of Space," deconstructs colonial cartographies and explores radical geographic imaginaries. She centers Black and brown feminist geographies, decolonial theory, and visual culture studies. Grants & Awards: Andrew W.
