Professor
Adolfo J. Rumbos is the Joseph N. Fiske Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at Pomona College, part of The Claremont Colleges, where he has been since 1991. His research focuses on nonlinear analysis, particularly boundary value problems for differential equations, with applications in elliptic partial differential equations. He employs variational and topological methods to study existence and multiplicity of solutions. His work has been published in journals such as Nonlinear Analysis and Journal of Differential Equations . Education: PhD and MA in Mathematics from the University of California, Santa Cruz; BS and BA in Mathematics from Humboldt State University. Research interests include nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems, variational methods, and functional analysis. His studies often address resonance phenomena in semilinear and quasilinear elliptic equations, leveraging advanced analytical techniques to explore solution behavior. Awards include the Pomona College Wig Distinguished Professorship for Teaching (1998), Irvine Distinguished Faculty Fellowship (2004–05), and Outstanding Faculty of Color Award (1997). Recent courses taught include Dynamical Systems, Mathematical Modeling, and Probability. His teaching emphasizes applied mathematics and interdisciplinary approaches.
