Assistant Professor
Andreas Mautner is an Assistant Professor and Head of the BioPlastics Technology research group at the Institute of Environmental Biotechnology, Department für Biotechnologie und Lebensmittelwissenschaften, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). He is based at the IFA-Tulln research facility and holds a Dr. techn. in Technical Chemistry from TU Wien, with postdoctoral experience at Imperial College London and the University of Vienna. His research lies at the intersection of sustainable materials and environmental biotechnology, with a focus on bioplastics, nanocellulose, polymer composites, and the valorization of renewable and waste resources such as wood, agricultural residues, and mixed textile waste. His work emphasizes the development of high-performance, eco-friendly materials for applications in water treatment, packaging, and advanced functional materials. Mautner’s recent publications demonstrate a strong trend toward circular economy solutions, including the upcycling of textile blends into biopolymers, the use of fungal and agricultural waste for material synthesis, and the development of hybrid membranes for selective pollutant removal. His research integrates materials chemistry, process engineering, and environmental science to create innovative biobased materials. He actively supervises academic theses and is involved in multiple research projects funded by national and international agencies. Mautner serves as a peer reviewer for over 20 scientific journals, including Composites Part B , Biomacromolecules , and ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering , and is a member of professional societies such as the American Chemical Society, European Bioplastics, and the Austrian Chemical Society. His community engagement includes scientific peer review for funding bodies like the Czech Science Foundation and the National Science Center (Poland), as well as participation in PhD and habilitation committees at universities including the University of Vienna and Luleå University of Technology.
