Professor Elpida Keravnou-Papailiou is a distinguished faculty member in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Cyprus, where she has held the position of Professor since 1996. She previously served in significant academic leadership roles including Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs (2002-2006), Dean of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences (1999-2002), and first Chairperson of the Department of Computer Science (1994-1998). She has also held national leadership positions such as President of the Governing Board of the Cyprus University of Technology (2009-2010). Her educational background includes a B.Tech in Computer Science (1982) and a Ph.D. in Cybernetics (1985), both from Brunel University, UK. Prior to joining the University of Cyprus in 1992, she taught at University College London as Lecturer (1985-1991) and Senior Lecturer (1991-1992). Professor Keravnou-Papailiou's research spans several important domains in Artificial Intelligence, with a particular focus on applications in medicine. Her pioneering work has centered on temporal reasoning in medical contexts, knowledge engineering, diagnostic reasoning, and intelligent data analysis. She has developed theoretical models for clinical temporal diagnosis that integrate causal, temporal and action knowledge, and has formulated abstract data structures like the Abstract Temporal Graph for modeling medical reasoning constraints. Her research has led to practical applications in water resource management and medical diagnosis systems. Her scholarly contributions reveal a consistent trajectory from foundational work on expert systems and knowledge representation to increasingly sophisticated temporal reasoning frameworks applied to medical contexts. The evolution of her research demonstrates a deepening specialization in temporal aspects of medical reasoning, culminating in her co-authorship of the seminal book "Temporal Information Systems in Medicine" (2010). Among her significant honors and contributions: Associate Editor of the journal Artificial Intelligence in Medicine since its launch in 1989 Guest editor for nine special issues of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Program Committee Chair for the 6th Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Europe (AIME'97) Conference Chairperson of the Board of the Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Europe (2003-2005) National Academic Contact Point for Recognition and Bologna Expert for Cyprus Professor Keravnou-Papailiou has supervised two PhD students at the University of Cyprus: Eleni Christodoulou (1999), who developed work in histological classification of breast carcinomas, and Hariklea Kazeli (2006), who developed an intelligent hybrid decision support system for water resource management in Cyprus. She has also been instrumental in implementing the Bologna reforms at the University of Cyprus and has contributed to national educational policy through various committees, including the Specialist Committee for Educational Reforms in Cyprus. She co-founded the successful Workshop Series "Intelligent Data Analysis in Medicine and Pharmacology (IDAMAP)" in 1996, which has continued for over fifteen years. Her work has had significant societal impact through her leadership roles in shaping higher education policy in Cyprus and her contributions to quality assurance frameworks for academic institutions.
