Professor Marion Eggert is a leading scholar in Korean Studies at Ruhr University Bochum, where she holds the Chair of Korean Studies within the Faculty of East Asian Studies and leads the Department of Korean Language and Culture. Her research is deeply rooted in the literary and intellectual history of Korea, spanning from the 17th to 19th centuries to modern literature and history, and she is actively engaged as a Principal Investigator in the SFB 1475 'Metaphern der Religion' project. Her research interests are extensive and interconnected, focusing on the cultural and intellectual dynamics of premodern and modern Korea. She specializes in Korean literary history, particularly the gasa and travel literature, and explores the intellectual history of the Chosŏn dynasty, including the reception of Western learning and the transformation of knowledge systems. Her work delves into epistolary practices, the cultural significance of dreams, and the politics of memory in modernist poetry. She is particularly interested in the intersections of literature, religion, and power, examining how cultural forms like travelogues and letters served as vehicles for political discourse, social identity, and cross-cultural exchange. Her recent publications reveal a strong trend towards analyzing the circulation of knowledge, the dynamics of religious encounters, and the metaphorical language of transcendence and memory. Her scholarship consistently bridges historical analysis with literary and philosophical inquiry, often placing Korean experiences in dialogue with broader East Asian and global contexts. This is evident in her work on Sino-Korean travel narratives and comparative studies of poetic imagery. Principal Investigator, SFB 1475 'Metaphern der Religion' Project Leader, Teilprojekt B02 Member, CERES Research Department Former Project Leader, 'Neuordnungen des Wissens in Korea' Former Fellow, Käte Hamburger Kolleg Professor Eggert has led and contributed to numerous significant research projects on the circulation of knowledge and religious dynamics in Korea. Her work has been supported by major academic collaborations and grants, enabling the publication of key edited volumes and research monographs. She has also been instrumental in building academic networks for the study of Korea in Germany and Europe. She is affiliated with several research centers, most notably as a Principal Investigator for the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 1475 'Metaphern der Religion' (Metaphors of Religion) at Ruhr University Bochum. This project is a major, long-term interdisciplinary endeavor exploring the role of metaphor in religious thought and practice. Her previous affiliations include the CERES (Center for Religious Studies) Research Department and the Käte Hamburger Kolleg, both of which are prestigious research institutions focused on interdisciplinary studies of religion and culture.
