Dr. Teresa J. Kennedy is a Professor of STEM and Bilingual/ELL Education at The University of Texas at Tyler, holding joint appointments in the College of Education and Psychology and the College of Engineering. She teaches Oceanography, Meteorology, and pedagogy courses across multiple colleges. With nearly 40 years in education, she has extensive K-12 teaching experience and certifications in Earth Science, Social Studies, Spanish, ESL/ELL, and Bilingual Education. Her research focuses on Ocean Literacy, STEM equity, second language acquisition, and global education policy. Education: Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction — Bilingual Science Education, University of Idaho M.O. in Oceanography, University of Rhode Island M.A. and B.A. in Spanish Language and Literature, University of Idaho B.S. in Secondary Education, University of Idaho Research Interests: Dr. Kennedy’s work bridges STEM education, bilingualism, and global sustainability. She co-led the UNESCO IOC Ocean Decade NGO Task Group (2023–present), authored/co-authored over 55 journal articles, and secured $38M+ in grants. Her projects include climate science research aboard NOAA vessels and international collaborations through the GLOBE Program. Recent Articles: Focused on STEM education models, ocean sustainability, and phenomenon-based learning. Highlights include the Ocean Decade Manual for NGOs (2024) and Contemporary Issues in Science and Technology Education (2025). Awards: Phi Delta Kappa Outstanding Dissertation Award (1998) Fulbright Awards to Ecuador (1993), Argentina (2014–15), and Hungary (2017) Grants & Leadership: Secured $5M+ grants at UT Tyler. Founded the Office of International Programs (OIP), managing 17 international partnerships and the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI). Currently serves on UNESCO’s NGO Liaison Committee and ICASE’s Executive Committee. Labs & Collaborations: Co-directs the UT Tyler GLOBE U.S. Partnership and participates in NOAA’s GO-SHIP research cruises. Active in UNESCO’s Ocean Decade initiatives and global STEM education networks.
