Associate Professor
Salvatore Benfratello is an Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering (formerly DICAM) at the University of Palermo, Italy. His academic career spans over two decades with significant contributions to structural engineering research and education. He serves in the Faculty of Engineering and has held various administrative roles including Secretary of the Architecture Degree Program at the Agrigento campus and member of the Department Board. His educational background includes: Graduation in classical studies (1985/86 academic year) Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Hydraulics Section, from the University of Palermo (April 9, 1991) PhD in Structural Engineering (October 1996) with thesis "Random Dynamics of Offshore Structures" Professor Benfratello's research interests focus on experimental, numerical, and theoretical analysis of structural systems. His work spans multiple domains including structural dynamics, material behavior analysis, and innovative construction techniques. He has made significant contributions to the understanding of Catalan vaults, sail materials, damaged structures, wooden structures, and seismic-resistant systems. His research often combines experimental validation with numerical modeling to address complex structural engineering challenges. His publication portfolio demonstrates a consistent research trajectory with over 80 publications. Recent work shows a strong focus on sustainable materials like fiber-reinforced geopolymers, innovative connection devices for steel structures, and advanced techniques for structural analysis and optimization. His research has evolved from fundamental structural dynamics to practical applications in seismic design and structural rehabilitation, with increasing emphasis on sustainable construction materials and methods. Professor Benfratello serves as a reviewer for several international journals including the ISI-classified Probabilistic Engineering Mechanics and Computer & Structures. As an educator, he has held teaching responsibilities for courses including Structural Elements for the Interpretation of Buildings and Statics for Architecture programs. He has been actively involved in PhD programs, first in Structural Engineering and subsequently in Civil, Environmental, and Materials Engineering. He has directed the Materials and Structural Testing Laboratory at DICAM, providing critical experimental facilities for structural research. His work bridges theoretical knowledge with practical applications, particularly in the areas of structural safety, seismic design, and innovative construction techniques.
