Professor
Paul Kaye is Professor of Immunology at the University of York and a member of the Experimental Medicine and Biomedicine research group at Hull York Medical School. With over 30 years of experience in leishmaniasis immunology, he is internationally recognized for pioneering research on macrophages, dendritic cells, and granulomatous inflammation during chronic infection. His academic foundation includes a BSc in Zoology from University College London (1981) and a PhD in Immunology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (1984), followed by progressive appointments at Imperial College London culminating in Professor of Cellular Immunology before joining York in 2004. Professor Kaye's research adopts a holistic approach to leishmaniasis, integrating immunology with mathematics, ecology, vector biology, and neuroscience. Current work focuses on host-directed therapies, lymphoid tissue remodeling, sand fly transmission dynamics, and therapeutic vaccine development through Phase II trials in Sudan. His lab employs cutting-edge technologies including 2-photon intravital microscopy, digital pathology, and computational immunology. Recent publications demonstrate deep specialization in leishmaniasis immunopathology while expanding into spatial transcriptomics for COVID-19 research, reflecting his ability to translate fundamental immunological insights across disease contexts using advanced molecular and imaging techniques. Key scientific recognitions include: Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator designation Election as Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci) FRCPath accreditation awarded by publication in 2004 As Principal Investigator, he has secured major funding including a Wellcome Trust Translation Award for therapeutic vaccine trials and an MRC Global Challenges Research Fund award for molecular pathological stratification. His research group maintains active collaborations across leishmaniasis-endemic regions in Brazil, India, Sri Lanka, and East Africa, with emphasis on clinical translation and capacity building. He leads the LeishPathNet digital pathology platform to enable global data sharing and is developing multidimensional molecular characterization methods for tissue biopsies, while continuing his role as Director of the Centre for Immunology and Infection until 2015 and ongoing research leadership within York's immunology ecosystem.
