Assistant Professor
Joseph Getzoff is an Assistant Professor of the Practice in Boston College's International Studies Program. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota's Department of Geography, Environment and Society (2020). His research focuses on the intersections of human-environment interactions, comparative settler colonialism, and global development histories, particularly in Israel/Palestine's Negev/Naqab desert. He has conducted fieldwork supported by a Fulbright Fellowship (2015-2017) examining state-led development projects and their impacts on Bedouin-Palestinian communities. Teaches courses on global political geography, environmental politics, and research methods Recipient of Clark University's 2022 Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher of the Year Award His work critiques developmentalist narratives like "make the desert bloom" and analyzes how environmental policies reinforce colonial structures. His publications explore neoliberal Zionism's spatial rationalities and transnational circulations of settler colonial practices. Prior to BC, Getzoff served as Visiting Assistant Professor at Clark University (2020-2022) and taught at Worcester State University (2019-2020).
