Dr. Jorien Vonk is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Science, Department of Earth and Climate at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Her research focuses on Arctic ecosystems, permafrost dynamics, and climate change impacts. She specializes in biogeochemistry and hydrology, investigating how Arctic freshwater and coastal systems respond to rapid environmental changes. Her research interests include permafrost thaw, greenhouse gas emissions, and lateral carbon fluxes in Arctic regions. Notable contributions include studies on riverine carbon transport, pan-Arctic catchment databases, and the role of small watersheds in land-ocean fluxes. Dr. Vonk teaches courses such as Biological Oceanography and Catchment Biogeochemistry. She has supervised five PhD theses and contributed to over 90 peer-reviewed articles. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and protecting terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
