Laini Nemett serves as Associate Professor of Drawing and Painting in the Visual Arts Department at Union College in Schenectady, New York. Previously holding the John D. MacArthur Assistant Professorship from 2015-2021, she teaches painting and drawing courses including plein air landscape painting that has resulted in notable student exhibitions. Her academic credentials include an M.F.A. from the Hoffberger School of Painting at Maryland Institute College of Art and a dual B.A. from Brown University in Visual Arts and History of Art & Architecture, where she graduated Magna cum laude. Nemett's artistic practice centers on the architecture of natural and built environments, with dual focuses on plein air landscape documentation and imaginative architectural collages. Her recent work tracks neighborhood transformations in upstate New York through direct observation, while also exploring ancient cliff dwellings of the American Southwest. She creates both objective environmental records and constructed scenes that fuse times and places into believable yet impossible compositions. Her methodology combines meticulous observation with conceptual exploration of how climate change and time reshape landscapes. Professor Nemett's exhibition record includes numerous solo shows at venues such as the Paul Mahder Gallery, Mandeville Gallery, and Guilin Art Museum in China, along with significant group exhibitions at the Albany International Airport Gallery, Kenise Barnes Fine Art, and internationally in Italy, France, and Africa. Her work has been featured in publications including The Washington Post, Times Union, and Daily Gazette. National Endowment for the Arts New Works Grant (2017) Queens Council on the Arts New Works Grant (2017) Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant (2012) Fulbright Scholar in Painting (2006-07) Artist residencies at Yaddo, Joan Mitchell Center, Ucross Foundation, and Hambidge Center As an educator, Professor Nemett maintains an active studio practice while teaching, regularly integrating her professional work into the classroom. She has supervised senior independent painting reviews and provides students with opportunities to engage with the regional art community through exhibitions and visiting artist connections. Her professional website (laininemett.com) serves as a comprehensive resource for her artwork, exhibitions, and artistic statement, documenting her evolution from early Fulbright work in Spain to current explorations of upstate New York landscapes.
